There are more AI tools than anyone can evaluate, and the lists that claim to rank them mostly rank whoever pays best. What follows is the short version — the tools that survive contact with real work — plus a route into the specific guide for your job. No affiliate links, no paywall.
How to read this
Categories, not a leaderboard. "Best" depends entirely on what you are doing, and a tool that wins for a solo founder often loses for a team of forty. Where a choice is genuinely close, we say so instead of inventing a winner.
The model you talk to
Claude for reasoning, coding and anything requiring long nuanced instructions. ChatGPT for breadth, native voice, and the widest ecosystem. Gemini if you live in Google Workspace, and for very long documents. Perplexity when you want cited sources rather than a confident paragraph. Writing code
Cursor is still the broadest default for editor-based work. Claude Code is the strongest agentic option for tasks you hand over whole. Skills changed what a coding agent is capable of more than any model release this year — they encode *how* to do something rather than what to know. The cost of AI tooling is rarely the subscription. It is the attention spent evaluating alternatives instead of shipping. Choose a model, a coding tool and one automation layer, use them until you can name a specific thing they cannot do, and only then look further.
